Delete Your Data
Last updated: June 17, 2026
This page explains how to delete your data from ChapterUp, the gamified reading app made by Sideways Lab. You can delete your entire account, or remove specific data while keeping your account.
How to delete your entire account
Deleting your account is permanent and cannot be undone.
- Open ChapterUp on your device.
- Go to your profile and open Settings.
- Tap Delete Account.
- Confirm when prompted.
This removes your data from our servers and clears the app's data stored on your device.
How to delete some of your data
You can delete individual items at any time, in the app, without deleting your account:
- Remove a book from your library.
- Delete a review, reading note, or highlight.
- Delete a bookshelf.
- Leave a book club or remove a friend.
If you can't sign in
If you are unable to access the app, email [email protected] from the email address on your account and ask us to delete your data. We may ask you to verify your identity before we action the request.
What we delete and what we keep
When you delete your account, we remove the following from our servers:
- your profile (email, username, display name, and date of birth);
- your reading activity (books, sessions, streaks, XP, and achievements);
- content you created (reviews, notes, book-club posts, recommendations, and bookshelves);
- your social connections (friends and book-club memberships);
- your in-app purchase records.
Some data may be kept for a limited time after deletion:
- Encrypted backups held by our hosting provider are overwritten on a rolling basis, no later than 30 days after deletion.
- Transaction records for in-app purchases may be retained where tax or other legal rules require.
- Social activity items (such as "finished a book") are removed from friends' feeds after about 90 days.
For full details on what we collect and why, see our ChapterUp Privacy Policy.
